Simplicity 2406

I'm back! Yes, after five weeks on the road I've finally returned home to hot and muggy Cairns. Boy is it muggy! Sauna anyone? My family and I headed off a week before Christmas to visit relatives in Victoria and South Australia. I've been to Melbourne, Port Fairy, Adelaide, Horsham, Swan Hill and a few spots in between. I was going to say goodbye, but wasn't sure if you're supposed to announce to the world that you're leaving your house empty for five weeks. After all, what's to stop a sewing-scissor wielding psycho breaking into my house and stealing my fabric stash!

Even though I didn't have ongoing access to a computer, I was able to keep up with everyone's blog posts by reading them on my phone. Handy little things. I have been enjoying watching everyone's sewing achievements and progress over the summer break. So even though I haven't been commenting, I have been lurking and thoroughly enjoying reading your stories rather than blowing all my lifesavings on glossy magazines (OK so I made a small investment).

One thing I have been enjoying is reading everyone's 2012 wrap-ups. This really got me reflecting on my past year, which I think I'll do a post on at a later date (better late than never). One thing I can say for sure is that my 2012 pattern of the year was....

***drum roll please ***

Cynthia Rowley's Simplicity 2406

Which brings me to this post. Here is my forth version/interpretation of this dress.

Simplicity 2406 (modified)

This dress was sewn using a cotton voile purchased from Emma One Sock. The skirt section was lined with bemberg rayon, also purchased from EOS. I'm really excited that through my last two versions of this dress, I have successfully been able to create a dress that is so appropriate to the hot, muggy, stinkin' climate I live in. Generally, cotton voile is the perfect weight, yet too sheer to go unlined or wear on it's own. Lining or layering is just too hot in the middle of a tropical summer. Sneaking lining into the bottom half only kinda of nails it!

As with my last version, this dress has been modified somewhat from the original design. Once again, I added an elasticised casing and ties to the hip line. I also modified the raglan sleeve to be sleeveless...if you know what I mean. Instead of adding a neckline facing, I bound the neckline and sleeves with self-made bias binding. I also added a strip of white entredeux to the sleeve seams and as a feature above the hemline of the skirt.

I am really really happy with this dress and have worn it again and again during the Summer holidays. I'm thinking I might even make a few tops from the top half. I really like the sleeves and neckline.

Here are my three previous versions:

Sewn using Milly silk

Sewn using Milly cotton voile

Wishing you all a belated yet fabulously creative, inspirational and successful year of sewing.

    1. I sure was. I didn't find it as bad as the humidity here though. Mind you, it hit the 40s combined with big winds in Horsham. Horrible!
