My Birthday Clutch
I love having special events to sew for. There's nothing like an up and coming party, wedding or trip to really get me motivated to sew something new and exciting. Having a deadline seems to keep me focussed. It's usually these garments that get finished and not cast to the side in the too-hard or too-boring basket.
That said, I'm starting to feel like I have too many clothes. Mostly they are sewn by me, but the number of dresses is starting to add up. Especially considering I don't actually go out all that much. As a mother of three small children, nights out are a rare luxury rather than a weekly event. For this reason, I opted not to sew a new dress for my birthday lunch. I already have so many lovely dresses hanging in my wardrobe to choose from.
Rather, I decided to make myself a new clutch to go with my recently finished Vogue 8529 blogged about here. I used Vogue 8527. This pattern has four different clutch patterns. I made View C. This is my second version of this pattern. The first one I made from ivory silk dupion shown here.
I wore this outfit yesterday to a lovely child-free lunch with friends at Palm Cove to celebrate my birthday. The silver butterfly ring was a birthday gift chosen by my children. The blue leather cuff was a gift from my mother-in-law from Christmas and I love it.
The bag is made using a some leftover silk tweed purchased from Emma One Sock. I absolutely adore the colour. It's pretty much a perfect match for my dress. I love the oversized bow. It's probably a bit more frou-frou than I'm used too but I must say I'm lovin' it.
I added two layers of interlining between the shell and the lining to give it a bit more structure. I also interfaced the lining.
I added a zippered pocket to the inside. I find internal zippered pockets are a bit of a necessity add always add them to my bags. The lining is made from some silk satin leftover from this dress.
I did a lot of additional handsewing on the front of the bag to keep the bow and ties in place.
