Vogue 8529 in Blue Woodgrain

Vogue 8529

If there is one word that I could use to describe this dress it would have to COMFORTABLE. I wore it out to a casual dinner and movie with some friends last night and it was as comfy as being naked. Fortunately for the other patrons I wasn't, but my goodness, it will be hard to wear a structured, fitted dress after this.

In addition to it being soooooooo comfortable, I also happen to think it's all a bit groovy. The shade of blue is extraordinary.

The fabric is a rayon knit that I purchased from EmmaOneSock during the Christmas break. It's super drapey and light but quite weighty, if that makes sense. I'm sure there's a word to describe this type of fabric but I don't know what it is. I haven't actually sewn many knit fabrics so my level of knowledge and expertise is pretty basic. From memory (it was only yesterday!) I removed more than 10cm from the hemline due to the weight of the fabric.

I sewed a muslin for this dress sometime last year using a woven fabric.   As you can see from the photo above, I may have to fix up the shaping around the bust. Due to the weight of the fabric, the curve is tad low.

It didn't actually occur to me to think about pattern placement on the fabric as I was cutting it out. I'm rather pleased with how it turned out though. I quite like the two fat splodges down my CF. Quite a nice surprise.

If I can be bothered, I may unpick the centre of the back facing and take it in a little as it has a tendency to gape slightly. This will be quite easy as there is a CB seam. I did actually do a square shoulder adjustment on my original garment but obviously not enough.

I also did a sway back adjustment as shown below. I finished the hem and sleeves using a twin needle.

Overall, this was a pretty quick dress as none of the seams needed finishing.

In summary I LOVE IT! I actually have plans to make a winter version. Hmmmm, maybe I should do that this week while the pattern is still fresh in my mind.

Check out Katherine's dress made up in the same fabric. We live 400km apart so we're never going to have an awkward encounter where we both turn up wearing them at the same time.

  1. I am so jealous, a dress that feels as cool as nothing at all is just what is needed in QLD in February. I wish I had one! I loved Katherine's dress and yours is equally delectable. Did you buy the fabric independently? My sister and I do this sort of thing, it is quite weird, when we live 2000km apart and end up with the same clothes - but she doesn't sew, so it only happens with shoes and handbags these days!

  2. This is the kind of dress I would wear and wear. Simple, comfortable, and super cool looking with that fabulous printed knit. I am off to look up this pattern that I overlooked!

  3. I think that you picked the perfect shade of lipstick to go with this dress. I really like the raglan sleeve at the back on you...very flattering...maybe you need to try more raglan styles? The side view shows that it fits you beautifully.

  4. Lovely dress. How funny that you both purchased the same fabric or did you plan the purchases together?

  5. I love the way you have placed the stripes . This is really stunning fabric and dress - is the postage for Emma One Sock very expensive?

  6. Looks like another winner to me. It fits you really well and I love the way you've changed the direction of the fabric for the top drape section. You and Katherine have great taste in fabric, you've made such different style dresses that I didn't even pick it as being the same fabric!

  9. I love, love, love your dress. I can't believe you didn't purposely place the 'splodges'. They couldn't have been more perfect. Chic + comfy = dress heaven
