:: eats & treats - Planet Saturn Cake

My little Australia Day boy turned 4 today. His request for this year's cake was a Saturn cake. It was, he informed us, his favourite planet after all. Hmmmmmm, I've always loved a culinary challenge. Luckily my husband and I had a 20 hour drive back from the Sunshine Coast to work out how exactly, we were going to pull this one off.

We ended up carving two hemispheres out of cake and covered them with ready-roll fondant. We coloured the fondant and rolled in some shiny sprinkles before covering the cake.

Next we made a large disc of toffee and sprinkled in smashed up boiled lollies before the toffee set. This was to represent the crushed rock and ice that makes up the ring (a fact provided by our 4 year old).

We then place the disc between the hemispheres and voila! A Saturn cake.

Doesn't the smile just make all the effort worth it.
