:: pins & needles - A Crooked Folder (My Creative Space)

My Creative Space for this week is:

Last weekend I sewed up a little art folder for my daughter. The folder is actually 'side-cycled' from a Sz2 girl's dress. I don't think I can actually use the term 'upcycled' as I've always associated that with improving the original item. Most often, daggy, out-of-date clothing into groovy clothing and accessories for the new millennium! True be told, there was absolutely nothing wrong, daggy or otherwise, with the dress. It's only misfortune was that it was simply too small for my daughter and so it faced the scissors.

The reason it ended up so crooked was that 1) the dress was small  2) I wanted to create a medium-sized folder  and 3) I wanted to retain all the pretty features of the dress. This just couldn't be achieved with perfect rectangles. Let's face it, perfect rectangles are for squares anyway!

Despite the lack of perfectly parallel edges, the folder is a hit. Meg thinks it is just lovely. So do I.

There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile.
He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile.
He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all lived together in a little crooked house.

  2. I have the same dress... I've had it in a pile to giveaway... mine is a size 4... I'm going to dig it up and make something.

  3. How lovely, she will keep it forever. As you know, we are always making variations on the pencil roll for gifts. On the weekend, Miles sewed one himself to give as a present. It was a lot more wonky than yours. I didn't have time to fix it up...I was a bit embarrassed when the child opened the present and had to make sure everybody knew that Miles made it and we weren't just giving bodgy presents!

  4. Love it! I'm all for upcycling (and sidecycling - just adding that one to my dictionary now :) ) I have a good circuit of hand me downs with friends but some little outfits have stayed in the back of the draw.. a poodle softie ?.. a bird softie ? Now I'm adding folder cover to the list of possibilities! I'm loving the design you've made and that you've not sacrificed style to perfect squares : )
