VWtopia by Paul (husband)
(560mm x 540mm x 70mm)
Our workplace held an art exhibition for which everyone was asked to produce an artwork. Inspired initially by some 3D paper/card art I saw on Etsy, I decided I wanted to make a cityscape with some cars driving around in it. Although I had a rough idea of what I wanted from the outset, the work evolved over time and ended up quite different from what I had imagined at the beginning.
The cityscape was made by piecing together numerous printouts of buildings from Google images, flickr and pbase. These were then arranged according to size (distance), traced onto foamcore card, cut out and spaced slightly using thick double-sided tape. The cars are positioned further in the foreground again, so the whole work is about 50mm deep.
What better vehicles than the iconic VW beetles to be driving around in this metropolis!
(You might recognise some landmark buildings amongst the cityscape. I wasn't able to please everyone though. One of my students asked, "Where's the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty?")
